Only a splash of points separated Darien girls swim-dive from defeating league power Greenwich last week.
The Wave fell just short 95-91 at the Cardinals’ birdbath on Oct. 3.
Darien trailed all the way, but hung in all the way as well, climbing from being behind by 26 points, to trailing by just six, after Olivia Leunis won the 100 fly in 58.84.
Caroline Orem’s victory in the 100 backstroke in 1:00.57 made it 84-72 for the hosts going into the penultimate event, the 100 breaststroke.
Victoria Chao won that in 1:09.06 and the Wave trailed by 10 with only the 400 free relay left to swim.
And the Wave made a last stab at an upset with Leunis, Orem, Courtney Ferreira and Amanda Bieler winning the 4-free in 3:39.86, leaving Darien back by only four points at the finish.
The Wave had second place finishes from Chao, Orem, Leunis, Bieler in the 200 medley relay, Ferreira in the 200 free, Leunis the 200 IM, Bieler the 50 free, Ferriera the 500 free, Lauren Rutledge, Francesca Milewski, Emily Nixon, Ferreira the 200 free relay.
Darien had third places from Orem in the 200 free, Julia Stobbie the 200 IM, Ruttledge the 50 free, Bieler the 100 free, Stobbie the 500 free, Chen, Mackenzie Coughlin, Maddie Burke, Stobbie the 200 free relay, Elizabeth Kearney the 100 back and Nixon, Milewski, Rutledge, Stobbie the 400 free.
Darien went on to beat St. Joseph 98-64 at home on Oct. 5, swimming the meet in exhibition after Kearney, Rutledge and Jessica Selensky went 1-2-3 in the 500 free put the Wave up 98-28 with several events to go.
Other wins included Claire Treesh, Megan Slaughter, Ferreira, Rutledge in the 200 medley relay, Bieler the 200 free, Chao the 200 IM, Ferreira the 50 free and 100 free.
