In a match-up of two top-10 ranked teams in the state, fourth ranked Darien topped number-seven Staples 22-36 at Greenwich on Tuesday.

Darien improved to 14-0 on the season, also notching victories over New Canaan 15-50, McMahon 15-50 and Greenwich 15-50.

We have to continue to work hard. I believe in the guys we have on this team.

— Tyson Kaczmarek

Mud and rain marked the 3.0 mile course at the Tod’s Point Cardinals nest.

“Obviously the rainy weather played a role in the race,” Darien coach Tyson Kaczmark said. “Guys were sliding, falling, and slipping everywhere. Footing was bad.”

Alex Ostberg placed second for the Blue Wave in 15:59.

Close behind for Darien were Marshall Huffman (16:23) and Colten Appleby (16:23) in third and fourth overall respectively.

“I was happy to get out of there without injuries,” Kaczmarek added. “Staples is a solid team. We know they will continue to get better as the season goes on and they will be a force at FCIACs.”

They were followed by Brian Davey (16:27, sixth), Peter Kreuch (16:31, seventh), Ben Olsen (16:43, ninth), Jack Sparkman (16:58, 11th) and Arthur Cassidy (17:06, 16th).

Said Kaczmarek: “We have to continue to work hard. I believe in the guys we have on this team.”
