The South Western Regional Planning Agency will meet with\ its eight member lower Fairfield County planning and zoning boards to better coordinate its efforts with local planning needs.
The meetings will be held over the next two months as SWRPA prepares to mark its 50th anniversary. They started in Wilton on Sept. 24 at 7:15 p.m. at the Wilton Town Hall Annex meeting room and will end on Oct. 30 at Stamford Government Center.
The agency will meet with Darien’s Planning & Zoning Commission on Tuesday, Oct. 2 from 8 to 9 p.m.
“As a regional organization, collaboration with the citizens of each town is essential, and we are enthusiastic to have a dialogue with each,” said Jerry Ellis, chairman.
Added Westport First Selectman Gordon Joseloff, who leads the municipal chief executive officers who make up the agency’s Metropolitan Planning Organization, “With economic pressures on all of us, it is more important than ever to coordinate what we do to the benefit of all our municipalities and its citizens.”
The eight agency members include Darien, Greenwich, New Canaan, Norwalk, Stamford, Weston, Westport and Wilton
The meetings, which are open to the public, are designed to air regional planning issues including transportation, disaster mitigation and transit-oriented development. The agency’s staff and board members will also discuss legislative programs that address the particular concerns of member municipalities.
“This effort represents an initiative that demonstrates our belief that regional planning should build from the grassroots of each municipality up to the region as a whole,” said Floyd Lapp, the agency’s executive director.
As the regional planning organization for lower Fairfield County, the agency focuses on inter-municipal issues of transportation, housing, community development, and the environment. It also provides a forum for local officials to collaborate on issues that extend across municipal borders.
