Two cars collided head-on on Tokeneke Road near Old Farm Road on Friday, Sept. 21, sending one of the drivers, who is pregnant, to Stamford hospital.
Darien Police said the 26-year-old Norwalk woman, who is at the end of her second trimester of pregnancy, began to feel dizzy as she drove her 2012 Honda Accord east along Tokeneke Road at 6:17 p.m. She then lost consciousness, police said, and traveled into the westbound lane striking a 2005 Mercury that was preparing to turn left onto Old Farm Road. The Honda struck the right front end of the Mercury and then hit a utility pole head-on, police said.
Firefighters on scene indicated the woman might have needed to be extricated from the car, but according to those on the scene, she was not. The pregnant driver told police she was trying to pull over to the side of the road just before she lost consciousness. The next thing she remembered, according to police, was waking up after the collision. She was taken to Stamford Hospital by Darien EMS Post 53 with non-life threatening injuries, police said.
The other driver, also a Norwalk resident, told police her back hurt but declined medical treatment and sought treatment on her own. The accident was being cleared by 6:45 p.m. No charges were filed as the accident happened because of a “medical issue,” said Police Capt. Fred Komm.
Last year there were two accidents at the Tokeneke/Old Farm intersection, according to a police statistics report. One accident involve someone driving on the wrong side of the road, and one happened as a result of a foreign object or animal in the road.
Two accidents happened last year as the result of someone falling asleep at the wheel. One ended in injuries and one resulted in property damage only, according to police.
