After stumbling into the season vs. visiting Westhill, Wave boys soccer was up and running on the road, beating Ludlowe 4-1 on Wednesday.

“Our key players stepped up.”

Darien had its first goals of the season — the follow-on season to its best on record — from Ben Highton, Spencer McMullin, Aidan Brannigan and freshman Andrew Mathew.

Brennan Branca led with three assists, and McMullin one for the Wave.

In goal Jack Fisher made 11 saves for the win.

“He had a good game,” said Wave (1-1) coach Jon Bradley. “Obviously after a shaky first game, he was back to his usual self. He made some key saves.”

Highton had the kind of goal that lights up the field as well as the scoreboard.

“He was out on the left, he cut in, he beat two defenders and then scored in the far corner,” Bradley said. “Ben scored a very good goal.”

Darien hosts Warde today at 4:00.

“Our key players stepped up,” Bradley said. “Branca getting three assists, Ben and Spencer with a goal each — and Jonathan Gill was excellent in midfield.”
