Parker Hamill (middle) proved a valued crease defender as the Generals streaked through 2017.

Parker Hamill (DHS Class of 2013) was first-team all-star and helped Washington and Lee to a first her senior year.

“I think our defense was our catalyst in a lot of ways,” said Washington and Lee coach Brooke O’Brien. “And she was the leader of that defense as a senior back there.”

Hamill, a captain standout defender, saw out her career an essential part of the winningest womens’ lacrosse team ever at Washington and Lee, that went 19-2 overall and 8-0 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, where it won the conference cup.

“She was a member of a tremendous senior class for us,” said O’Brien of the Third Team All-American who was another brick in the wall of the second ranked DIII defense that averaged 4.14 goal-against a game. “There were eight of them and I think the class really set the bar for our program. And allowed the team to have unprecedented success.”

Hamill played a role in keeping opponents to single digits in 20 games in 2017.

Parker Hamill fought through injury at Darien High, then won a career to remember with the college game.

“She’s never been a flashy player, but she’s been a consistent player,” O’Brien added. “Our defense this year was a high pressure zone and her athleticism allowed her to be a part of that.

“She had an important role on the crease of that zone; and the crease defenders kind of make or break you in terms of their decision making and how they defend people in that area; and how they pick up cutters in the middle.”

And Hamill made the cut when the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) announced its 2017 College Division All-State Women’s Lacrosse team recently, named as First Team Defender, while O’Brien became Coach of the Year for a second time.

“Her athleticism was important,” said O’Brien. “But (it was) also just her understanding of how a zone should work; and the decisions she made on a game to game basis, helped the zone be effective.”

Hamill came up with 25 ground balls, produced 11 caused turnovers and had three draw controls.

She earned first team all-region honors and participated in the IWLCA Senior All-Star game last spring.

“I think Parker in particular (was) a strong force for us and had been a contributor with the defense over the past three years,” O’Brien said. “And our defense is what helped us play at such a high level.”
