While patrolling the Post Road early Sunday morning, a Darien Police officer discovered a man sleeping at a traffic light with his 3-year-old granddaughter asleep on the floor behind the front passenger seat.
Police said the 38 year-old Stamford man fell asleep in a 2008 Toyota Yaris at the flashing yellow light at the Ring’s End Road intersection. The officer saw the man sleeping and approached the car just as it began to move. It stopped near Old King’s Highway North, police said.
Police detected alcohol and the Stamford man eventually failed his field sobriety test. While searching the car, police found a small child asleep on the floor.
“When questioned, [he] stated that the child is his granddaughter which was later confirmed by officers,” stated Police Capt. Fred Komm in an email.
The child was later turned over to her mother and the matter was referred to the Connecticut Department of Children and Families for investigation. The man was held in lieu of posting a $10,000 bond. He was scheduled for arraignment on Monday, Aug. 27.
