A truck dumping dirt causes propane leak on Tokeneke Road Saturday afternoon

Members of the Darien Fire Department spray escaping propane with water to help dissipate it after a truck tore through the lid of a tank on Tokeneke Road Saturday (Darien Times/Kristen Riolo photo).

A truck attempting to dump some dirt into some brush had a run-in with a propane tank Saturday afternoon, causing a leak that needed to be contained by Hocon Gas.

Lt. Alex Orsi of the Darien Fire Department said the truck dumped the dirt but nicked the cover of the propane tank owned by New Beginnings Church on Tokeneke Road, causing damage to the cover.

Orsi said the fire department was equipped with a winch that allowed it to pull the truck out of the way and allow Hocon access to the damaged tank cover. Hocon was able to install replacement tank.

Though propane was leaking for about two or three hours as the situation was resolved, Orsi said the weather and fire fighting equipment meant no danger to the surrounding area.

Orsi said the windy day along with spraying the escaping fumes with water dissipated the gas quickly.

The truck dumping dirt suffered minor damage to the bumper.
