Wave has most winning array of teams the school has ever seen

The Class of 2016 weaved the Wave into a crossover of starting rosters, with many players sharing titles in multiple major sports. As a sampling, Darien had Colin Minicus (No. 3)…

Any way you spell it, the blue in Blue Wave means that in spring of 2016, Darien blew them all away.

Darien High had FCIAC champions in baseball, the boys’ and girls’ lacrosse teams, boys’ volleyball, girls’ tennis and boys’ golf. And more of that success carried on into states.

It’s been a longer run than that, though, with the Class of 2016 rolling through its time on field, in the rink, and the gym, that saw the title ripples extend back through several years, with previous senior classes playing their part in an unmatched period in school history.

The lacrosse teams’, boys’ and girls’, broke out the abacus to total up new streaks for their programs.

Football won more in this span than it has ever done before, including four Turkey Bowls straight, two FCIACs and a return of the state title, with Mark Evanchick breaking the state record for sacks.

Wave baseball scored its first league title in decades and boys’ soccer had its best season ever as league and state runner-up.

Boys’ and girls’ hockey made landmark championship runs, as the boys’ won a first state title since 1969, followed last winter by a first repeat state crown, with the girls rolling their FCIAC title streak to four years, and, taking states.

Girls’ tennis came back as FCIAC champion last spring and was state champ in 2015, led by the school’s first two-time player of the year, ’14 and ’15 singles champ Kateri Martin.

Wave girls’ swim/dive unseated once dominant Greenwich and secured a new reign as pool princesses of the county and state.

And that is all just a dizzying sparkle burst of what’s gone down as the Wave has risen to new heights in so many sports in recent years.

Below is a rundown of what titles the Class of ’16 leave in its wake; beginning as ripples themselves, then building to large waves in catching the strong current of the classes that flowed before them. Just as the players behind them do the same.

Is it over?

Like Wave girls’ lax had written on its warm-up shirts: Waves Never Die.
