To the Editor:
As a young woman interested in politics, I am consistently disappointed by the paucity of female role models in today’s political sphere. Despite the increasing number of women that are elected to public office, male political leaders still far outnumber females. This is true in all sectors of government. If more women do not assert themselves as strong leaders, young women will have no one to look up to, only exacerbating the existing gender gap.
It is for this reason that I am supporting Linda McMahon in the upcoming Senatorial elections. She is a strong female in many respects, and her successes are not limited to politics. Her background identifies her as someone able to overcome adversity, as she came from a working class family in rural North Carolina and still built the business with her husband that is now a hugely successful corporation.
Linda’s position as CEO of the WWE makes her a visible female role model in the business world, and her expansive knowledge of that world has allowed her to create a job plan that will stimulate the current floundering market in Connecticut. Such a coherent plan, with features such as a middle class tax cut and reduction on spending in Washington, is likely to truly create change.
I believe that Connecticut would benefit from having a woman like Linda as a U.S. senator. She is ambitious and hardworking, and demonstrates a passion for solving the problems of families struggling as hers once did. Most importantly, she will bring the perspective of a strong female leader to office. Our nation’s young women need someone to look up to, and I believe we have found such a person in Linda McMahon.
