Two oil tanks, one weighing over two tons, another over three tons, were lifted over the downtown Gulf station and lowered into the ground by crane on Thursday afternoon, July 19.

The new state-of-the-art tanks replace 30-year-old tanks removed last week. Vinny DeRentis, owner of Darien Auto Specialists, said the tanks have to be replaced every 30 years. The new tanks will be part of new, state-of-the-art environmental monitoring pilot program that uses computers and other technology.

While DeRentis said it will be about a month before he’s selling gas again, the station is still servicing vehicles.
