Obituary: Mary Lucretia Orteig

Mother of Darien resident, 87, owned Connecticut radio stations

Mary Lucretia Orteig, a former longtime resident of New Canaan and a resident of Redding, passed away on Sunday, July 15, at Bridgeport Hospital. Born on Oct. 11, 1924, in New York City, she was the daughter of the late Michael O’Brien and Lucretia Guerra O’Brien. She was 87.

Mary Lou graduated from Manhattanville College in Purchase, N.Y. She was vice president, secretary and treasurer of Berkshire Broadcasting Corp., a family-owned radio station group in Connecticut. Mary Lou was one of two or three women who owned radio stations.

She is survived by her husband, Raymond Orteig of New York City; a son, James B. Lee, Jr. of Darien; Suzanne Lee of New York City; Cynthia Lee of Denver, Colo.; and three grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters, Alice Ann Clifton and Margaret Winters Everett.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Thomas More Church, 374 Middlesex Road, Darien on Thursday, July 19, at 10. Burial will follow at Lakeview Cemetery in New Canaan. lawrencefuneralhome.com
