Fines coming soon for unlicensed dogs

Owners subject to $75 fine starting in August

Connecticut State Law requires that all dogs six months of age and older, even dogs kept solely indoors, must be licensed with the town. The town clerk’s office at Town Hall issues dog licenses for $8 a year for a spayed or neutered dog; it is $19 a year for a dog which is not spayed or neutered.

Dog licenses must be renewed every year by July 1, and are valid until June 30 of the following year.

Proof of your dog’s current rabies vaccination is required when applying for the dog’s license.

Licensing your dog helps ensure that your dog is returned to you if it becomes lost, and may help you to avoid kenneling costs that occur when a dog’s owner can’t be located. In the event of an incident involving your dog, which requires medical attention for a person, licensing will help to assure that your dog has been properly vaccinated.

This may prevent some unnecessary medical costs, which you will be responsible for.

The fine for an unlicensed dog is a $75. The fine for failing to vaccinate your dog for rabies is $136. Tickets for these violations will be issued starting in August.
