Second Stop & Shop employee arrested over stolen pocketbook cash

Darien Police arrested a second Stop & Shop employee whom they said was involved in the theft of cash from a patron’s pocketbook on Sunday, May 27.

Police said that Norwalk resident Darlineda Abelard, 23, was “implicated in the theft subsequent to a review of the store’s surveillance video system,” stated Police Capt. Fred Komm in an email. The pocket book had $180 in cash that police said Abelard, along with another Stop & Shop employee, Steviemarie Murphy, took from the pocketbook. Both Murphy and Abelard turned themselves in to police after being issued an arrest warrant.

Abelard paid a $250 bond and has court on Thursday, July 12.

A person who identified herself as a friend of Murphy’s, but declined to give her name, called The Darien Times and said Murphy was transferred to another Stop & Shop store, and she also refuted Murphy’s involvement in the theft. Attempts to contact Stop & Shop’s corporate office to confirm whether Murphy still works there were unsuccessful.
