Pear Tree Point School takes first in quiz bowl challenge

Barbara Ivey and Ken Romeo, the coaches of Middlesex Middle School Quiz Bowl, invited Darien’s fifth grades to form teams of four players each and represent their school in a first ever quiz bowl challenge for elementary school. The competition was held on June 1 at Middlesex Middle School.

Quiz Bowl is an academic competition that features questions from all subjects including: math, science, history, geography, literature, fine arts, pop culture and sports. Darien’s six elementary school entered the competition with Holmes and Royle registering one team, Tokeneke and Pear Tree Point School registering two teams and Hindley and Ox Ridge sending four teams.

Points were awarded for speed and accuracy. There were opportunities to earn bonus points as well as opportunities to lose points. After five lively rounds Pear Tree Point School emerged overall champions with PTPS fifth grader Karsten Rynearsen receiving the trophy for individual high point winner.
