Darien’s ‘Best’ artist classically trained in Russia

Darien Art Sergey Stepanenko Hudson

Sergey Stepanenko of Darien won Best in Show at this year’s Darien Art Show, held earlier in June, for this painting of a Hudson River view.

Sergey Stepanenko was awarded Best in Show in the 54th Darien Art Show & Sale this month. Stepanenko’s submission was a 36” by 36” oil on canvas of a colorful Hudson River view painted with palette knife. More of his work can be seen at Darien Art & Frame.

A Darien resident, Sergey Stepanenko was born in 1956 in Barnaul, Russia, and was classically trained in Frunze, Kyrgyzstan, at the Fine Art College where he received his degree. Later, Sergey earned his master’s degree in book design from the Moscow Printing University.

His work includes a large body of travel landscapes painted over the course of 33 years as an internationally commissioned artist. He’s also well known for his expert mural and trompe l’oeil paintings which can be found in the homes of Keith Richards, the Kennedys, the Eisenhowers and many area residents. Sergey remains available for portrait and mural commissions and his paintings are shown locally at Darien Art & Frame, 1977 Post Road.
