The Darien High School anatomy club, led by biology teacher, Will Heher, is taking on the task of building an Aquaponics system to raise and breed fish, and grow plants in a closed system.

“The project looks to be a model of sustainable food growth, and eventually we would love to begin feeding our own cafeteria, as well as local food banks and soup kitchens with high quality, organic fish and produce. The goal is to bring awareness of where our food comes from, and how important it is to move towards sustainability,” Heher said.

The anatomy club students will begin building the tanks this week in the greenhouse at DHS in conjunction with the STEM program, who is designing the hardware including solar power to reduce energy inputs.
