Obituary: William T. Lowney III

Former Middlesex Middle School

William (Bill) Thomas Lowney, III of Fairfield, a former Middlesex Middle School teacher in Darien, died Tuesday, Aug. 27 in Boston, following a brief illness. He was 77.

Born Dec. 13, 1935 in Somerset, Mass.,  he was the son of William and Irene Collins Lowney. Mr. Lowney and his brother Jerome grew up in Somerset where they developed a lifelong devotion to the Red Sox. Mr. Lowney was a proud Eagle Scout, carrying his certificate in the front of his wallet all of his life.

He graduated from Notre Dame with a bachelor’s degree in history and then received his master’s degree in education and administration from Fairfield University. He taught as a Brother of the Holy Cross for 10 years in Connecticut, Massachusetts and New York. Ultimately, he found his calling as an extraordinary, inspired and much-loved teacher of “the crazy eights,” his family said. He taught Darien public school eighth graders about American history and leading student trips to explore Washington D.C. and Boston, Mass.

Although his own talents were recognized throughout his career, his students’ achievements meant more to him, his family said. He married Joan Manning in January 1966 and they raised their family in Fairfield.

Mr. Lowney is survived by his wife, Joan, of Fairfield, daughter Meghan of Bridgeport, son Liam and his wife Kerri Spillane of Marshfield, Mass., and two grandchildren, brother Jerome Lowney and his wife Mickey, sister-in-law Nancy MacFarland and her husband Garth, and brothers-in law John Manning and his wife Joey and Barry Manning and his wife Margie and fourteen nieces and nephews and many wonderful friends. Mr. Lowney was predeceased by daughter Shannon Elizabeth Lowney.

An informal Irish send-off in celebration of  Mr. Lowney’s life is planned for Sunday, Sept. 29 from 12 to 4 p.m. at the Jacky Durrell Pavilion, 401 Fairfield Beach Road, Fairfield. A brief program will begin at 12:30pm.
