Obituary: David J. Culbertson

David J. Culbertson of Vero Beach, Florida and formerly of New Canaan, Connecticut, passed away peacefully at home on May 26.  Born in Patterson, New Jersey on November 17, 1926, he was a graduate of Cornell University earning both a BA(‘50) and an MBA(’51).

His business career began as a manufacturing trainee for IBM in 1951, followed by a number of key roles in manufacturing, production control, methods and systems, and personnel before becoming Director of Executive Development at IBM World Trade Corporation, Blaricum, Holland.  While in the Netherlands he established the first Executive Development Program for IBM managers abroad.  Upon returning to the States he served in a number of key financial roles.   In 1968 he joined Xerox Corporation as Controller of the company’s Business Products Division.  Soon thereafter he assumed the role of Vice President and Corporate Controller.  This was followed by roles running key business units including the Publishing Group and the Information Systems Group.  He then was named Senior Vice President and Senior Staff Officer before retiring from Xerox in 1980.   He then joined Macmillan Inc. as President before permanently retiring in 1982.

He served on numerous boards over the years including the Cornell Board of Trustees, the Advisory Council for Cornell’s business school and the Advisory Council of New Haven College.

He was an avid competitive sailor and a member of the Stamford Yacht Club and the New York Yacht Club.  He was also a member of the New Canaan Field Club.  In his fifties he discovered running and over a five year period completed 13 marathons worldwide.  After his move to Florida he redirected his energy to golf approaching the game with the same enthusiasm as his many other sporting activities and was an active member of the John’s Island Club.  When not engaged in some facet of physical activity, he would be absorbed in a history book or completely enthralled listening to one of his many opera recordings.

He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Helen Eaton, a sister Ann Culbertson of Denver, Colorado, his son, John of New Canaan, his daughter, Elizabeth Prater of Bradenton Florida and three grandchildren.
