In memory of their wife and mother who died from brain cancer last year, the Dowling family of Darien has set up the Miss Kate Foundation and will be hosting its first event on the Intrepid.
“We were trying to figure out how to create a foundation in her memory,” said Patrick Dowling, her husband, “the boys decided to give back and help NYU.”
All donations to the foundation will go to the NYU Langone Medical Center, which treated Kate Dowling. The foundation’s mission is to “fund advancing treatment technologies for brain cancer research,” according to its website.
It is also “a way to keep her memory close to my sons,” Dowling said. His son Patrick is the chairman of the foundation, and Connor and Mack are board members, he said.
They chose the name “Miss Kate” because it was what Kate Dowling’s nursery school students called her, Dowling said, “but more importantly — we will ‘miss’ Kate forever.”
The first event will be on Friday, May 3 on Hangar 3 at the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum. There will be a “V.I.P.” reception from 7 to 9 p.m. and a DJ and dancing from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. The recommended contribution is $125. R.S.V.P. to [email protected]
