Born July 31, 1942 in the Vinegar Hill section of Brooklyn, New York, Reverend Gibson grew up under the careful watch of his mother, Catherine, and older brother, Bill. He spent most of his early years playing in the neighborhood where he grew up and in the nearby Brooklyn Navy Yard. He attended Boys High School in Bedford-Stuyvesant when it was still an all boy’s school. He went on to Columbia Bible College in Columbia South Carolina. He completed his Doctor of Ministry degree in counseling from Westminster Theological Seminary in 1993.
His first church was a small Baptist church in Queens. He went on to pastor at Grace Baptist Church in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn and in 1974, he and his family moved to Darien, Connecticut where he spent 36 years serving as the pastor of Calvary Baptist Church and ministering to the community of Darien. On November 7, 2010 Reverend Gibson preached his last sermon to his congregation at Calvary Baptist before retiring with his wife, Irene, to Williamsburg, Virginia.
On July 19, 2011, Reverend Gibson lost his wife to pancreatic cancer. Soon after his loss, Reverend Gibson took residence at Patriots Colony in Williamsburg , Virginia where he passed away, April 17, 2013 with his son, Jonathan, at his side.
Reverend Gibson is survived by his son, Stephen, and daughter-in-love, Karen, of Stratford, CT, his son, Jonathan, and daughter-in-love, Carrie, and their sons, Dylan and Tucker, and daughter, Chloe Irene, and his older brother, William, and sister-in-love, Patricia, of Kinnelon, New Jersey as well as many nephews and nieces whom he loved.
The family received friends on Sunday, April 21 from 4-7 PM at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd, Williamsburg. A service was held on Monday, April 22 at 1 PM at Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church, 1677 Jamestown Rd, Williamsburg. Interment followed at Williamsburg Memorial
