Library gears up for gala

Theme of party is "light and bright"

To keep the Darien Library among the best in the country, it’s hosting a “Spring into Reading” gala for visitors and patrons.

The library’s largest fundraiser will feature several returning favorites this year, such as the Doug Allen Band, auctions and a wine vault, according to the gala’s chairwomen, Jessica Blouin and Rachel Donovan. The two auctions, silent and live, will be led by a professional auctioneer — Philae Knight of Phillips auction house — for the first time, said Kerrie Kelley, a library trustee board member. This year there will be an audio system installed to help Knight who is donating her time, she said.

The theme of the party is “light and bright,” Donovan, co-chairwoman said. There are about 40 volunteers, with everyone assigned to a committee. There is a committee for food and beverages, decorations, marketing, auctions, and book plates, Donovan said.

This will be the library’s fifth annual gala. “I feel like this is a pretty well-oiled machine,” Blouin, co-chairwoman said.

“Funds raised from the event will be dedicated to expanding library resources, including purchasing new books and supporting programs and guest speakers,” according to the library website.

The library supports many visitors who keep coming back and later volunteer for the gala. “So many young families visit the library for the children’s room,” Kelley said, “and I feel when people move to town, that’s their first visit to the library, with their children. That’s where I think it begins”

Guests at the gala will be able to bid on several different items and experiences. These will include front row tickets to a Red Sox versus Yankees game at Fenway Park, Yankees box seats, a stay at Telluride, Palm Beach and St. Andrews in Delray Beach, a custom painting by Kiki L’ Heureux, nights at various NYC hotels, theater tickets to Annie & Pippin, golf at local country clubs, a weekend in Palm Springs, a truck ride to school from the Heights Fire Department. Plus, the library offers some amazing auction items that it hosts such as a birthday party sleepover at the library for eleven friends, an Oscar viewing party complete with catered food and a Superbowl party for up to 20 in front of the 122” big screen in the library’s conference room.

The library will be selling book plates prior to the event at the library, Palmer’s, Espresso Neat and Darien Sport Shop. Refreshments will be provided by Simply Creative catering.

The gala will be held at the Darien Library on April 27 at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $130, and $100 is tax deductible. Patrons can purchase tickets or donate to the library on its website.
