Jackson, WY resident, Luke Stalker (Peter Stalker, IV), 21, son of Anne and Peter Stalker, III, died in an accidental fall in Paris, France Sunday, March 10th. Stalker was participating in the Geneva Study Abroad Program of Colgate University, where he was a Junior; double majoring in Peace and Conflict Studies and International Relations.
According to his parents, Luke arrived into the world very quickly on August 15, 1991 in Greenwich, CT. Growing up in Darien and New Canaan, Luke attended New Canaan Country School through eighth grade. His love of skiing, soccer, baseball and digging in the mud flats at low tide were the early stages of a lifelong love of the outdoors. Luke’s love of languages stemmed from his parents who speak several. He also was immersed in the Rockies through his participation and long connection to Sanborn Camps in Florissant, Co, where he started as a camper at age 10, became an ‘outbacker’ at age 15, and a counselor between his freshman and sophomore years of college.
As Luke approached high school, his family moved to Jackson, WY in 2006 after skiing there for many years. While hesitant at first due to the incredible difference in environment from the east, Luke quickly fell in love with all that Jackson had to offer, especially the small size and unique education he received at The Journeys School. Always willing to try new adventures, Luke strapped on his first pair of Nordic skis as a Freshman and by Junior year, finished 14th at States as well as competing for the Intermountain Division team.
Luke’s passion for international affairs began his sophomore year in high school with an initial trip to Chile to volunteer in a national park over his spring break. The following year, Stalker devised his own semester abroad in Patagonia where he attended Colegio Puerto Natales, an international IB school. He returned from this trip fluent in Spanish and used his knowledge of slang and nuance to challenge his high school Spanish teacher, amongst others.
Luke excelled at his studies which allowed him to matriculate at Colgate University in the fall of 2010. Luke enjoyed life at Colgate and continued to explore new adventures: skeet shooting as a PE requirement, joining Phi Delta Theta fraternity, and spearheading the Colgate chapter of Students for Sensible Drug Policy. At the end of his sophomore year, he declared his double major and applied for a place in the highly competitive Geneva Semester Abroad program.
Luke’s interest in politics, international relations and peace studies paralleled his inclusive, connector nature and his unselfish and humanistic view of the world. His passion for living life well and challenging the norms impacted a wide swath of friends, family and acquaintances both in the United States and abroad.
Luke will live on in the hearts of his parents, Anne and Peter Stalker, his three sisters, Laura, Emily and Helen, and his grandparents, Debby and Peter Stalker, II. A celebration of Luke’s life was held at the Jackson Campus of Teton Science Schools on Saturday, March 16th. A memorial service is scheduled for March 25th at Colgate University in Hamilton, NY. and an additional service is tentatively planned for mid-April in Jackson. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that gifts be made to the Luke Stalker Program for Global Initiatives c/o Teton Science Schools, Jackson, Wyoming.
