GIRLS INDOOR TRACK

Four years in coming, Darien’s FCIAC title was not something anyone in the know would have not seen coming last week.

“Prior to the meet I had told the team that the opposing coaches were looking for second place, therefore let’s put the stress off until next week‘s state meet,” said Wave veteran track and cross country coach Steve Norris. “Have fun with this one.”

Darien scored 116 points to second place Ridgefield’s 50 for its first FCIAC girls indoor track title in four years, at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven on Thursday.

“So many of our people are established big meet performers that the coaches could sit back and watch the meet play out,” Norris said.

Staples was third with 48.

— Dillon Schoen and Anna Sulger went 1-2 in the 600 in 1:36.08 and 1:36.46 respectively

— Grace Loh won the 1000 in 3:03.76

— Wave first in the 4×200 relay in 1:47.03

— Leah Hotchkiss first in the high jump at 5-02

— Maddie Schneider first in the pole vault at 10-06

— Catherine Lacy first in the long jump at 18-04.50

— Lacy second in the high jump at 5-00

— Jessica Thornbury second in the pole vault at 10-00

— Schneider third in the 55 hurdles in 9.17

Lacy’s high jump broke the school record of 17-9, her own, set last year.

Schoen’s time in the 600 was a DHS best breaking the 1:38.28 run by Sulger on Jan 12.

Schoen and Sulger have the two fastest times in Conn.

Sulger ran the second fastest time in school history in the 300; Loh ran her best time of the season in the 1000; Lacy’s long jump was the farthest in the state this year; the 4×200 ran the second fastest time in DHS history and is this year’s second fastest time in Conn.

The Class L state meet is 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the New Haven Athletic Center.

“We are favored to beat Windsor,” Norris said. “In this meet Windsor has beaten us each of the last two years by one point.”
