The Southern Connecticut Synchronized Skating (SCSS) Prejuvenile Division team “Shimmers” competed at this qualifying event for synchronized figure skaters on Friday.
Approximately 150 teams competed at the event hosted by Lake Placid Olympic Center, NY and sanctioned by U.S. Figure Skating through the Skating Club of Lake Placid.
Darien skaters include Shimmers Brooke Ferris and Michelle Han, Shadows Katrine Ryan and Katrina Vassell.
Shimmers earned second in the qualifier and earned Pewter in the championship round. The Shimmers also received a gold medal at the Colonial Classic Competition in Lowell, Massachusetts on January and a silver medal at the Terry Conners Open in Stamford on Dec.
“(I am) very proud of my entire team because we have all worked so hard and put in so much practice and effort to win,” said local standout Ferris.
The award ceremony was held outdoors at the “Oval.”
Lily Fine a Stamford resident said: “The Oval was absolutely without a doubt the best thing I’ve done so far in skating. It was cold and we were wet from the snow but everyone still had a great time!”
Westport Resident Sidney Willis added that, “Some of the most challenging parts of the season were mostly in the program,” and “we worked very hard on the twizzles, the transition in our configuration box, and traveling the circle.
“Our teams are very lucky to have such great coaches.”
Another SCSS team, the Shadows competed in the Open Juvenile division, placed first in the qualifying round and fifth in the championship round.
Shadows captured gold at the Colonials Classic, and silver at the Terry Connors Open.
“I am very proud of both our teams,” said coach Gina Valenzano-Gomez. “They have had a very successful season and their hard work paid off in Lake Placid. It’s a challenge just to make it to the finals at Easterns.
“So, to have both our teams rise to the occasion and secure a place in the final round against such a large field of competitors is a big accomplishment.
“To have them both skate well enough in the finals to finish in the top five is even bigger.”
Shadows and Shimmers team members are from Stamford, Norwalk, Darien, Greenwich, Riverside, New Canaan, Westport and Old Beth Page, Scarsdale, and Rye Brook, N.Y.
Shadows include: Candace Wright, Katrina Vassell, Emily Merole, Alexis Hartigan, Ariel Goldman, Rebecca Kniffin, Katrine Ryan, Amanda Brea, Rachel Bellantoni, Klara Hoherchak, Sami Scordo, Emilly Hernandez, and Katie Marciano.
