The Darien Nature Center is offering a free fly fishing and tying class with fly fisherman Will Lillard, on Wednesday, Jan. 30 from 7 to 9 p.m. The class is free and open to anyone who wants to learn, including teens.
Will Lillard, of Lillard Fly Fishing Expeditions says there are great fly fishing opportunities right here in Connecticut.
A former fly fishing guide in Colorado, Lillard says, “one can experience world class trout fishing on the Farmington and Housatonic Rivers and unbeatable opportunities for catching striped bass on a fly in the Long Island Sound.”
He will present a short slide show about Lillard Fly Fishing Expeditions, a provider of unique fly fishing summer adventure camps for teens and families.
After working for three years as a fly fishing guide in Colorado, Lillard became aware of the importance of recreational fishing to our environment. He decided to return to school and earned his master’s degree in Environmental Conservation at NYU’s Steinhardt School.
Amazed by his fellow students’ and professors’ hesitation to acknowledge fishing as a valuable resource for conservation education he started to do some research. Lillard discovered that over 33 million people spent over $41.8 billion on the recreational pursuit of fish in the U.S. last year and that fishing leads to a heightened environmental ethic. Additionally, fishermen and hunters contribute over 80% of the funding for state and federal conservation organizations through the sales of hunting and fishing licenses.
Lillard developed Lillard Fly Fishing Expeditions (LFFE) to help teens and families reconnect with nature and gain an environmental ethic.
Lillard welcomes accomplished fly fishers and tyers to come out and share their fish tales or favorite patterns. If you have never tried fly fishing or fly tying, come out for a fun and informative evening. Bring a teen and help inspire the future of the conservation movement.
Fly tying will begin at 7 p.m., followed by a slideshow and fishing discussion from 8 to 9 p.m.
