Most times, Darien’s first half-dozen games of the season, always vs. some of the best teams in the state, prove to be a trial by fired pucks for the Wave.
This is not like most seasons.
This year the trials and capitulations are all on Darien’s opponents, so far.
And Wave starts get no better than in climbing to 2-0 beating West Haven 5-1 at home on Saturday.
The Blue Devils fall to 0-2.
Darien scored one in the first, two in each of the second and third periods, ahead the whole time.
Trent Bergin and Jack Knowlton scored two apiece and Brendan Hathaway had one for the Wave.
Hathaway and Knowlton each had four points on the night, while Bergin came away with three, Dana Wensberg and Aidan Loh each had an assist.
Mike Collins — his goals against an even 1.00 — had his second straight win, making 19 saves.
Mike Salvino stopped 23 shots in the West Haven goal.
Darien plays New Canaan 4 p.m. Wednesday at DIR.
Hamden beat New Canaan 6-2 Saturday, and the 0-2 Rams lost to Division I defending state champ Notre Dame WH 2-0 in the NC opener on Wednesday.
