The Darien-based youth group Global Girls & Global Guys Unite is hosting a walk-a-thon this Sunday, Dec. 9, at the Darien High School track from 1 to 3.
The entire community is invited to come out a walk to support the group’s mission to grow livestock-based food and income-generating programs in rural villages across Tanzania. The group is working under the umbrella of the Darien-based social enterprise Unite The World With Africa, founded and directed by Darienite Anne Wells.
Costs to walk are $15 per family or $5 per individual. Children 10 and under are invited to walk for free. The group and its director Darienite Simone Quinn, mother of Hindley second grader and a Middlesex Middle School and Darien High School student, is organizing a large bake sale for the event. There will also be African gifts for sale — including Maasai beaded ornaments, bracelets and more.
“We are working to raise enough funds to build a piggery with The New Life Foundation in Moshi, which educates and cares for more than 500 orphans, as well as a chicken and goat program with the Matonyok orphanage outside of Arusha, which cares for 75 of the neediest orphan cases in the district,” says Unite Founder and Director Anne Wells, mother of two Hindley students.
How far does the money go? A little can do a lot. One egg laying chicken costs about $20. A piglet is $50, and a dairy goat is $100. Wells, Quinn and their growing the group’s teams are hoping for a huge showing on Sunday so they can also purchase a few oows, which cost $500-$750 each.
Global Girls and Global Guys UNITE is a youth group that empowers girls and boys here in the United States to experience their personal power as change agents in the world. The group’s teams work to achieve three main goals: Education (learning about life in East Africa); Connection (creating personal relationships with peers in Tanzania); and Fundraising (coming up with unique and impactful ways to mobilize their communities). 100% of funds raised by Global Girls directly supports the Darien-based social organization Unite The World With Africa’s work to advance community health and education programs throughout East Africa.
