Parent Awareness: Learn to protect the emotional lives of boys

Boys will be boys and it’s finally time to talk about them.

Michael Thompson, Ph.D., author of the nationally recognized book, “Raising Cain: Protecting the Emotional Lives of Boys,” will discuss how to support a boy throughout his early school years and how to help him maintain emotional openness throughout the teenage years at Darien High School on Thursday, April 2, from 7-9 p.m.

The event is sponsored by the YWCA Parent Awareness and Darien Library.

Educators and parents in the U.S. are engaged in an important debate about the way we raise and educate boys. After years of research on gender equity in schools, it is time to consider some of the risk factors that afflict the lives of boys.

Why are boys four times more likely than girls to be sent to school psychologists? Why are boys diagnosed with 60-80% of learning disorders? Are boys’ areas of strength, physical and visual-spatial perception, valued in the quiet, word-dominated school environment?

Parents with children of all ages are welcome to attend for free. Registration is recommended.
