A packed UPS truck became engulfed in flames in front of Darien’s Town Hall Wednesday afternoon, destroying the truck and possibly most of its contents.
Noroton Fire Department Captain John Hessmer told The Darien Times that some kind of catastrophic engine failure caused the truck to go on fire, and it was on fire when the driver pulled up to Town Hall.
Hessmer said the ultimate cause would be determined by UPS, but said the truck was beyond repair.
“We knocked the fire down in 10 minutes, but it took a long time to empty the truck of its packages, which were also on fire,” he said.
Hessmer said the fire was “fully involved” when the NFD arrived, and said the driver was all right.
Fire Marshal Bob Buch said UPS has security guards watching the remains of the truck and has hired a clean-up contractor to clean up any oil or smoke damage on the Town Hall site.
